NEGLECTED HORSES SCANDAL

Stable owner under investigation

BY DAVE JONES

LEGAL ACTION IS TO BE TAKEN AGAINST THE OWNER OF A DILAPIDATED STABLE IN ORIHUELA WHERE UP TO SIX HORSES HAVE DIED IN PRIMITIVE CONDITIONS.

Orihuela Town Hall launched an investigation into the ramshackle compound after officials were bombarded with complaints by animal rights groups, local residents and politicians

The remains of several dead animals have been discovered in and around the premises situated on the edge of the village of Molins – two kilometres outside Orihuela town centre.

Costa Blanca News visited the ramshackle compound this week and found a single emaciated horse inside a concrete shack without a visible source of water or food. The remains of a dead animal lay abandoned behind the compound.

Susana Fernández Escalante, a spokeswoman for the equine organisation Fundación Altarriba, said a number of denuncias had been made to SEPRONA – the ecological branch of the Guardia Civil – and the local authority over the dead horses and the poor condition on the remaining animal.

“There is a mare in a state of extreme malnutrition in the buildings,” she said.

“We have spoken to the health department at the town hall who have recognised the deplorable conditions at the site but say they cannot act until a report has been produced.

“We regret that this has gone on for so many years and that successive denuncias have not had any effect, not only because the site does not meet even basic requirements for animal habitat but because horses have died and no one has stopped it.”

A spokesman for Orihuela town hall said a vet and a local police officer had now visited the stable but had not been able to enter as the building was locked.

He said that from the outside they had verified that the stable was in a ‘woeful condition’ but concluded that the horse inside was not suffering from malnutrition.
The spokesman added: “They did not find the horse living amongst the bones of dead horses and they noted that the horse was not dying of hunger and there was food available.”

However he said that the decision had been taken to initiate legal proceedings against the owner of the stables due to the condition of the building.

A reporter from German newspaper Costa Blanca Nachrichten was able to interview the owner of the horses, Evaristo Durende, when he visited the stables in Molins last week. Sr Durende told the reporter he was not the owner of the stable.

A Socialist party spokesman at Orihuela town hall has demanded urgent action be taken to save the remaining horse and that sanctions follow if the police discover that the law has been broken.
